Hiney
Winery Earns International Honors at
the Country's Second Largest
International Wine Competition
August 7, 2006 - Texas, Indiana, and
fine wines; what do these three
things have in common? A lot more
than you might think, as both Texas
and Indiana are part of the
ever-growing wine renaissance of the
eastern United States. States like
Indiana, Texas, Virginia, Missouri,
and New York are leading the crusade
to elevate the status of wine making
(which before prohibition, was the
seat of American Fine Winemaking) to
the level of other noted wine
producing areas, namely California.
The fine wine consuming public of
Texas will be pleased to know that
Big Red and Thor Hiney have struck a
blow for Texas Wine, at the "Indy
International" wine competition in
Indianapolis, Indiana.
Indiana, not often thought of as a
wine state, recently welcomed wine
entries from Tasmania, Australia,
France, Italy, and the rest of the
world, to compete in the prestigious
Indy International Wine Competition.
Ranked among the top two
competitions in the United States,
based on the total number of
entries, the Indy international has
built quite a reputation among
consumers and the international wine
industry.
Over 3,200 commercial wine entries
flowed in from 12 countries
worldwide; to be tasted, analyzed,
and scored. The Indy International
has grown from 484 entries to 3,200
in only fourteen years.
All
entries are judged individually and
are eligible to earn a bronze medal,
silver, gold, or no medal. The
Hiney Winery, gave a great
showing this year, earning a
silver medal for RED HINEY WINE and
a bronze medal for its DRY WHITE
HINEY WINE in the stiff
international competition. "This
makes Hiney Wine stand out as some
of the best wine in the world. We
entered two wines and both came out
with a medal for each entry.", said
a happy T. J. Donnelly, owner of the
company that owns, operates and
manages HINEY WINE. The entire staff
at the winery is extremely proud of
the record number of medals earned
by Texas’ most famous wine estate.
And they should be proud, as Hiney
Wine has never been entered before
in International Competition.
Each wine in the "Indy" was scored by a panel of
five judges. More than 50 judges from around the United States and Canada flew
into Indianapolis to participate in this prestigious event. Wine writers,
winemakers, and experienced wine experts tasted 120 wines per day during the
competition. One judge summarizes, "Judging is an enjoyable job, but to get
through 120 wines per day takes a great deal of concentration and attention to
each grape variety. Compare it to tasting every type of fruit you can imagine in
one day and judging each on it's own merits."
Look for the exposure of the Hineys to expand
as they begin several regional advertising campaigns to promote and market their
wines in Texas, Washington, Oregon and Ohio.
